Google Maps for plumbers: how to get more calls

When a pipe bursts, people don't browse. They search, look at the map, and call. Here's how to be one of the plumbers they see.

The short answer

Choose "Plumber" as your main category, list every service you do (drain cleaning, water heaters, leak repair, and so on), set a realistic service area, only list 24-hour hours if someone really answers, and add real job photos every week. Ask every customer for a review. Never add keywords like "Emergency Plumber Baton Rouge" to your business name.

How customers find a plumber

Most plumbing searches are urgent and on a phone: "plumber near me," "water heater repair," "drain cleaning." The customer looks at the map, checks the stars, and taps call. They rarely scroll far.

That means two things matter most: showing up in the top 3 from where the customer is standing, and having a listing that makes them trust you in a few seconds.

Set up your listing like a plumber

  • Main category: Plumber. Add extra categories only for big parts of your business, like "Drainage service" or "Water heater installation service."
  • Services: list each job type separately, in plain words: drain cleaning, water heater repair and replacement, slab leak repair, sewer line repair, toilet repair, garbage disposal installation.
  • Service area: list the cities and parishes you really serve. Google's guidelines say a service area generally shouldn't reach more than about two hours of driving from your base.
  • Hours: only show 24 hours if a real person answers the phone at 2 a.m. Listing emergency hours you don't keep leads to bad reviews fast.

Photos that win plumbing calls

People want to see that you're real, clean, and capable. Snap photos on the job and upload a few every week:

  • Your truck or van with your company name
  • Before-and-after shots of repairs and installs
  • New water heaters, clean pipe work, finished bathrooms
  • Your techs in uniform (with their permission)
Post after storms and freezes.

When a hard freeze or big storm hits Louisiana, post an update about burst pipes and flooding with your phone number. Those are the days people are searching.

Reviews: make asking part of the job

The best time to ask is right after you fix the problem, while the customer is relieved. Text them a direct review link that same day.

Ask them to mention what you fixed, like "water heater" or "slab leak." You can't tell customers what to write, but a simple "it helps if you mention the job" is fine. Reply to every review, and keep replies to bad reviews short, calm, and offline-focused.

Mistakes that hurt plumbing listings

  • Keywords in your name, like "Joe's Plumbing Emergency 24/7 Baton Rouge." This is a leading cause of suspensions.
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices to show up in more cities. Google often catches these and can take down the listing.
  • More than one listing for the same company.
  • Showing a home address as a storefront when customers don't come to you. Use a service area instead.

Google often asks plumbers and other home service businesses for extra verification. Keep your license, insurance, and photos of your branded vehicle handy.

Back it up with your website

Give each main service its own page on your website, and mention the areas you serve with real details. Make sure the phone number on your website matches your Google listing exactly, and that your site loads fast on a phone.

Your plumber checklist

  • Main category set to Plumber
  • Every service listed in plain words
  • Service area matches where you really go
  • Hours are accurate, and 24/7 only if true
  • New job photos every week
  • Review link sent after every job
  • Business name has no extra keywords
  • Same name, phone, and address everywhere online
